Construction of a 1000-seater Community Hall and associated works in Mdladla, Nkomazi Local Municipality.

Challenge

KwaMdladla, formally known as Vlakbult village is a small community situated deep in Nkomazi local municipality, it is surrounded by many other small villages much like itself. One of the main challenges faced by this community was the lack of community-based facilities for the empowerment of and direct interface with the community from the local municipality. The construction of the community hall is a means for the local municipality to uplift the community and provide a space for change, growth, and entertainment. The structure consists of multiple facilities aimed directly at community development and support such as a Library facility with a study area, computer lab, and a book shop. The hall is well detailed with a multipurpose main hall area that can accommodate a myriad of events for the community from weddings to indoor sports. The Hall will also be home to municipal offices to prevent locals from having to travel far to interact with local government about their needs and concerns.

Solution

Hoxana Consulting Engineers has been tasked with the design and project management of this cornerstone facility in the community of Mdlala by the Nkomazi Local municipality. During construction, we have seen thousands of bricks being laid to form what is fast proving to be this community’s new pride. More importantly, we have seen job creation for community members and skills transfer from Hoxana and the Main Contractor to the community at large. The project is currently at the finishing stage and as we complete this journey we are proud to have been allowed the opportunity to leave Mdladla just a little better than we found it.

House in Steyn City

Challenge

Steyn City is an attractive estate lifestyle concept comprising 8 341 apartments, including 5 155 townhouses and 3 186 city-centre-style apartments; 731 cluster homes; 818 freehold houses situated on 695-4 000m2 stands; 120 retirement village units, a golf course with clubhouse, a gym, soccer pitches, swimming pools, fuel station, fishing lakes, a skate park and an equestrian centre. All of this is set amidst beautiful parks, green belts and water features.

This master piece is to be built in Steyn City South Africa. Hoxana Consulting Engineers has been appointed by the client to provide the complete scope of professional civil services for the construction of the 785 m2 house. The scope include structural design, stormwater, electrical and project management.

Solution

Hoxana is proud to have been associated with the project which is currently underway successfully.

The geotechnical survey was conducted by Hoxana in order to provide the foundation solution, the structural solution of the house, the electrification of the house and controlling of underground water as well as providing the cost estimates and the constructions schedule.

Boskrans WWTW New Inlet Pump Station.

Challenge

Boskrans WWTW Inlet works was inadequate to sufficiently pump sewage water to Main Works. A new pump station was required to meet the current and future expected sewage flow. Hoxana Consulting was appointed take over the supervision and monitoring of the construction of the pump station which included the civil, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation.

Solution

The New pumpstation was designed for total capacity of 1300l/s. The scope of the civil works included the construction of the drywell, wet well, superstructure, MCC Room and Generator. The scope of the mechanical and electrical works included the 3 pumps, control and instrumentation, MCC, PLC, Standby Generator, Lightning protection and odour control system In addition to the monitoring and supervision of the construction works, Hoxana Consulting Engineers provided engineering services such structural analysis and design of a 6t Crane, groundwater and stormwater management plan and hydraulic analysis and performance assessment.

Construction of a 1.3km Paved road from lovecorner to cemetery (Zwelisha) for the city of Mbombela

Challenge

In recent years the population of Zwelisha Village has grown at a notable rate and the need to connect the community with surrounding areas called for the upgrading transportation services. The road from Lovecorner to the Khakheriya Cemetery was previously a gravel road that did not provide adequate means of transportation for any vehicles. The Community itself is a very under privileged and under developed area and remains in constant need of development and empowerment. The City of Mbombela then saw a great need to provide a road giving the community adequate direct access from the village to the local cemetery in the neighboring village known as Clau-Clau and beyond. The design of this road also called for the provision of a sufficient storm water drainage system to adequately drain all water that may obstruct and or damage the road over time.

Solution

Hoxana Consulting Engineers took the Design challenge on with the aim of ensuring that the needs of the community are met adequately and the road as well as the storm water system withstand both the test of flash floods and time. The project was completed in 2020 after 18 months of focused design and project management. The local community benefited greatly from this project in terms of small business growth and general skills transfer. The aim was to deliver a well-engineered solution and in addition the journey provided great socio-economic improvement for the residents of Zwelisha.

Re-development of the Ebuhleni Swimming Pool

Challenge

The Ebuhleni Swimming Pool is located in the Township of Tembisa in the City of Ekurhuleni.

The existing swimming pool has not been properly maintained and is in a poor condition. Also, the swimming pool in its current state has proven to be unable to cater for the growing demands for swimming activities in the broader Tembisa area.

This has been coupled with the fact that there are generally minimal recreational facilities in the area as well as little exposure to sporting activities such as swimming to people from historically disadvantaged communities.

Solution

The City of Ekurhuleni initiated the Ebuhleni Swimming Pool in a bid to increase the impact of sport and recreation development in the area and to promote higher levels of competition in the Swimming sporting fraternity.

To encourage and develop greater interest in the sport, the City has earmarked the facility as a prime location for an iconic development that will service an extensive population of the Tembisa area.

Hoxana Consulting Engineer has designed the new swimming pool to consist of the following:

•   Complete new tiled 25m x 50m swimming pool with including a separate tiled baby pool of 5m x 10m
•   Ablutions facilities, public change rooms, staff change rooms, lifeguard office, first aid room, filter room, kiosk and store rooms;
•   Separate chlorination room
•   Club house and a pavilion to accommodate spectators which will enable the community to establish a swimming club and to host school and development galas.
•   Floodlights around swimming pool for swimming events at night.
•   Roll-up stations for lane ropes including lane ropes for hosting galas and training to be purchased.
•   Parking area to be identified and tarred.
•   Paving around pools, walkways and buildings to be installed.
•   Disabled accessibility to all buildings, wheelchair users and the elderly.

Alliance Ext. 1

Challenge

Alliance Ext. 1 is located in the jurisdiction of the City of Ekurhuleni.

The project is a greenfield project that was initiated to address the housing backlog and to help eradicate informal housing through the provision of quality low-cost housing in an approved and registered Township.

The target project beneficiaries are currently living in a nearby informal settlement and there is therefore a need to provide them with decent housing.

Solution

Hoxana Consulting Engineers was appointed by the City of Ekurhuleni for the opening of the township register for the project as well as for the design of house plans, foundations and monitoring of the construction of the foundations. The project is for 409 units.

Hoxana Consulting Engineers design philosophy was in line with the minimum norms and standards as set out by the Department of Human Settlements for low cost housing.

The main considerations in resolving the housing backlog problem were to design structurally safe and stable foundations.

Development of Nguni Hostel

Challenge

Nguni Hostel is located in the jurisdiction of the City of Ekurhuleni. The hostel was originally developed to accommodate migrant labour in urban areas.

Overtime, informal settlements mushroomed close to the hostel precinct as those seeking affordable housing in proximity of employment opportunities flocked to urban areas.

Poor maintenance of the hostel, overcrowding and the vandalism of the infrastructure has resulted in the hostel deteriorating and becoming unfit for human habitation.

Also, the overcrowding at the hostels, has put enormous strain on the bulk engineering service infrastructure, to a point where the engineering services that are currently available, are unable to meet to the demands of the population.

Hoxana Consulting Engineers was appointed by the City of Ekurhuleni to undertake the design of the Site Development Plan and thereafter design and supervise the installation of a number of bulk engineering services such as civil, structural, electrical and mechanical engineering services.

Solution

Through Government’s initiative to redevelop hostels, Hoxana Consulting Engineers has undertaken some planning activities for the redevelopment of Nguni Hostel.

Hoxana Consulting Engineers has proposed a new layout plan for the area. The proposed layout plan has been designed to have an array of landuses that will enhance the lives of the beneficiary community. Also, the current buildings will be demolished and new buildings that adhere to Human Settlements norms and standards will be built.

As part of their appointment, Hoxana has designed bulk engineering services for the area. The engineering services will ensure that the residents of Nguni Hostel have access to proper engineering services.

Development Of Six (6) Soccer Training Grounds and Goal Posts In Kgotsong

Challenge

Kgotsong is located in Bothaville, in the northern part of the Lejweleputswa District Council of Free State Province under The Nala Local Municipality.

Nala Local Municipality intends to develop existing playing fields in Kgotsong into practicable soccer training grounds as the community had a penchant to use the playing fields for soccer. These existing playing fields had a rough finishing and did not have proper accessories for Sport practice. Having practicable soccer grounds would increase the impact of sport and recreation development in the area and could promote aspiring youths to represent their country on a sporting professional level

Solution

Hoxana Consulting Engineers have been appointed by the Nala Local Municipality (NLM) to undertake the planning, design and rehabilitation monitoring of Six (6) soccer training grounds and goal posts in Kgotsong. The successful implementation of this project will increase the impact of sport and recreation development in the area.

Hoxana designed the Six soccer training grounds development in different wards of Kgotsong. The Project is still underway and will reach completion at the end of March 2021.

Kgotsong 1km Paved Road in Wards 11 & 12

Challenge

Kgotsong is located in Bothaville, in the northern part of the Lejweleputswa District Council of Free State Province under The Nala Local Municipality.

Nala Local Municipality intends to upgrade existing internal roads in Kgotsong to meet the minimum level of service stipulated in the Road and Transportation Master Plan. The internal roads in Kgotsong Ward 11 and 12 have significantly eroded due to surface runoff and increase traffic. In their current state, they constitute a socio-economic burden and a health and safety hazard. During the rain event, large pools of water form and remain days after the rain has gone, effectively blocking access to the community. Additionally, surface runoffs have been reported to flood into people’s yards causing inundations. It is for these reasons that NLM has decided to upgrade the gravel roads to a paved road and provide efficient stormwater management.

Solution

Hoxana Consulting Engineers have been appointed by the Nala Local Municipality (NLM) to undertake the planning, design and construction monitoring of 1 km internal access roads in Kgotsong. The implementation of this project will improve the level of service of the roads and manage stormwater surface run-offs.

Hoxana designed the roads and monitored the construction process which reached completion on the June 29th, 2020.

Kwazamokuhle Switching Station Project

Challenge

Kwazamokuhle is located in Hendrina under Steve Tshwete Local Municipality. The Municipality intends to construct a switching station that will supply developing industrial and residential areas in Kwazamokuhle.

In recent years the population of Kwazamokuhle has grown significantly. New housing developments have been constructed. In addition to this, the switching station will supply an industrial area within the locality of Kwazamokuhle. The expected loading on the housing development and proposed industrial area is expected to be 15MVA. As a result, this necessitated the construction of a new switching station that will be fed from Hendrina main 88/11kV substation.

Solution

Hoxana Consulting Engineer were appointed by Steve Tshwete Local Municipality to carry out the construction of the switching station. Hoxana is undertaking the planning, design and construction monitoring of the Kwazamokuhle switching station which is progressing smoothly.

Hoxana designed the switching station to be able to supply electrical power to the growing residential population of Kwazamokuhle and as well the industrial areas.
